Publishing 101

SO, YOU WANT TO WRITE A BOOK . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .GET. . . . . . .
PUBLISHING 101
by Jane Friedman

I attended a talk recently by Jane Friedman about the latest in publishing tips and tricks, how the industry has changed. Her news set me back on my heels. No one has to tell a writer about how the industry has turned upside-down and backwards, but Jane relayed the very latest, her book Publishing 101 - because it’s just out - truly an eye-opener.

Authors now, in order to present their work to a prospective publisher, must show their platform, not just their proposal. A platform? Who ever heard of that? Publishers now concoct a P&L (profit and loss) report on your manuscript before they say much of anything to you. P&L? What? See what I mean? Writing a book, then selling it to a publisher, is just not what it used to be. Groan. . . . . . . . .
