*** The 2014 IANDS North American Conference will be August 28-31 at the Marriott Hotel in Newport Beach, California. The theme this year is "Hope, Healing & Life Transformations." If you never been to a conference on the near-death experience and related subjects, treat yourself this year and come. Near-death conferences are like no others. There is a friendliness that pervades, a sincere interest in all who are there, a sense of joy. This is the one thing people comment on first - not the speakers - the love that is there, the sense of "this is your family." There's just not another type of conference anywhere that has the "feel" this one does. All drawings will become a part of a film/DVD/ power-point to be played as background to any talk I give about my new book coming out this August. I haven't seen this movie as yet or read the book. Many adults and children have had NDE's as per Dr PMH Atwater's research, following all her books. Not all NDE's are the same. What concerns me with the release of this movie which is only based on one child's NDE, is that it can portray a stereotyped scenario which is based on a Christian religious experience. That is not the case at all when it comes to the realities experienced by various NDE'ers.
Tina, the movie was excellent, and portrayed with great accuracy what families and their children go through when a child has had a near-death experience. So, don’t fret. It’s okay. The only thing about the movie which is NOT typical, is the father finally coming to terms with his own doubts and fear, and accepting his son’s experience as real and heaven as real. This part is unusual, as near-death kids in most families are make fun of, told to shut up, or accused of making it all up – just the imagination. You can deny the experience, but not the pattern of aftereffects. That’s way so many near-death kids grow up thinking they are “alien,” as they cease to be like others in many ways and feel as if they are “different.” I recommend my book The New Children and Near-Death Experiences for detailed, in-depth information about this.
In the book, however, the father’s beliefs and words come out strong, almost overpowering Colton’s. Remember, Colton only heard his father’s beliefs and sermons since babyhood (and before) – not anything else. Thus, he uses his father’s imagery and languaging on occasion. The father wrote the book. Colton was too young to do that, so there is filtering here and bias. Don’t get sidetracked by any of this. The experience is real and how Colton handled it is real. All experiences are colored to some extent by the culture and language constraints of the experiencer. Even with children. Keep this in mind.

Good comments, I agree with both... the Christian dogma springs up in the book a good deal, the movie less so, but a great movie and a very important one -- a breakthrough in this field, that the subject can be served to the most massive popular audiences throughout the world, and we can all continue to be more enLIGHTened.

You’re right, Jeff. The breakthrough is that children have near-death experiences, too. Even though Colton’s Dad was more fundamental in his views, the fact that he finally came to terms with what happened to his son is both rare and wonderful. Most parents do not take their children seriously and discount them, which can cause lasting problems with the child later on. Blessings, PMH
